A harness that fits well stays comfortable on walks and is hard to slip out of. One that fits badly can rub, restrict movement or let a nervous dog back out of it. Here is a simple way to get the fit right.
Measure before you buy
Use a soft tape and measure around the widest part of your dog’s chest, just behind the front legs. Compare that number with the size guide for the harness. If your dog is between sizes, choose the larger one and tighten the straps.
Check the fit on your dog
- You should be able to fit two fingers between the harness and your dog’s body.
- The chest strap should sit on the breastbone, not across the throat.
- Straps should not dig in behind the front legs or limit shoulder movement.
- Your dog should not be able to back out when you apply gentle pressure on the leash.
Watch for rubbing
After the first few walks, check for flattened fur, red skin or scratching at the straps. Adjust the fit or switch styles if you see any of these.
Recheck as your dog changes
Puppies grow quickly, and coats thicken or thin with the seasons. Recheck the fit every few weeks.
